Passing the Bread started in May 2008, when nine churches in Zimmerman, MN, were asked to have a Food Distribution (Second Harvest Heartland). The united efforts of these churches made for a successful food distribution, making a real difference in the lives of many.
Pastors and lay leaders of these nine churches meet monthly to try and find ways to help the community. The Churches involved are:
7th Advent/Connection Center
Blessed Cross Methodist Church
Crossings
Faith Community Lutheran Church
St. John Lutheran Church
Christ Our Light Catholic Church
Zimmerman Community Church
Zimmerman Evangelical Free Church
Zion Lutheran Church
Zimmerman Mayor, Dave Earenfight, decided that he would like to see the community offer an ongoing food distribution. With the help of leadership at St Pius X Catholic Church this ongoing program was initiated.Donations came from other area churches and individuals and from all the Zimmerman schools (Westwood, Zimmerman Elementary, the High /Middle Schools).Food drives by students from area schools and donations from businesses such as the American Legion have been a big help.Recently, Passing the Bread was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation.
We are working together to feed the community of Zimmerman and surrounding areas. We are trying many avenues to come up with monies to make this work.We work on donations only, so we are also asking for donations from you to keep the hungry fed in these trying times. We ask you to consider this as a way to help your neighbors in need and be a part of the local community.
According to the Minnesota Food Share statistics for 2009, “Since 2000, the number of Minnesota children living in extreme poverty has doubled - Minnesota children are growing poorer faster than the nation’s children overall.”Also, “of those who use Minnesota Food Shelves, 47% of adults and 14% of children skip meals to stretch their family budget.”
